It’s no secret the Filipino cuisine through the centuries has been influenced by many different cultures. Countless Filipino recipes are inspired by a foreign culture in some aspect or another. Chinese cuisine undeniably is one of the foreign cuisines that brought a huge influence to Filipino cuisine. Chinese cuisine’s influence is still very evident in many of the Filipino dishes that are commonly eaten today.
There are many Chinese dishes that I can think of that us Filipinos have adapted into our cuisine and evolved it to suit the Filipino palate. Some examples I can think of are siopao, palabok, and many of the other pancit recipes in the Philippines. The Chinese influence on our food has fully integrated into our cuisine.
Other than the Chinese influenced Filipino dishes, authentic Chinese foods also have a strong presence in the current climate of Filipino food. We need to acknowledge that Chinese cuisine have become very popular in the Philippines, and it’s not going anywhere, because of a nationwide restaurant chain called ChowKing.
Sure, there are the odd Chinese restaurants here and there located in cities but if it wasn’t for ChowKing, Chinese cuisine wouldn’t be as mainstream as it is today. A lot of the food items in ChowKing’s menu have a Filipino twist to the Chinese dishes but it serves as a stepping stone to introduce a lot of Filipinos to what authentic Chinese cuisine is all about and spark their curiosity.
I was introduced to several new Chinese dishes on my first visit to a ChowKing restaurant. The bowl of Chow Fan is one of them and since then, I’ve visited several Chinese restaurants and tried their version of the chao fan.
Chao fan simply means Chinese fried rice. Of course, fried rice isn’t new to Filipino cuisine. There are plenty of sinangag recipes out there. Chao fan is simply the Chinese way of preparing fried rice. It has a specific sort of flare to it and I am quite a fan.
You can eat chao fan as is and its already quite filling for a meal or you can have another dish with your bowl of chao fan. Plus, it’s considerably quite healthy because of the ingredients used with a variety of vegetable cuts in the mix.
So that’s what we’re making for in today’s recipe. But since this site is meant to highlight Filipino recipes, I opted to share a Filipino style pork chao fan recipe rather than a purely Chinese version of the dish.
It’s a great recipe if you’re feeling energized to put in some extra effort in your fried rice. Plus, like any sinangag recipes, this Filipino style pork chao fan recipe makes great use of leftover rice.
There is a fair bit of preparation that needs to be done with the mixed vegetables and the scrambled eggs but other than that, you just have to toss in the ingredients in the pan at different points in the cooking process.
All the ingredients in this recipe are also everyday ingredients that every Filipino use so there’s no need to search high and low for some exotic Chinese ingredient. I also recommend using a yok to make mixing all the ingredients easier. But if you don’t have one, a big pan will suffice.

- 150 grams Ground Pork
- 3 cups of Cooked Rice
- ⅛ cup of Water Spinach
- ½ cup of Mix vegetables
- ½ small slice Onion
- 3 cloves of slice Garlic
- ⅛ cup of Soy sauce
- 2 tbsp. Oyster sauce
- 2 pcs. Egg
- 3 tbsp. Oil
- In a pan put the oil, eggs and salt then make scrambled eggs and set aside.
- In the same pan add a little oil and saute garlic for 15 seconds.
- Add onion and saute well. Add ground pork and mix well.
- Seasoned with oyster sauce, soy sauce, sugar and pepper.
- Add mixed vegetables and chopped water spinach.
- Lastly add cooked rice and scrambled egg. Mix well
- Served while hot. Enjoy
