Puto Cheese Recipe

Craving for some fluffy delicious treats to snack on? This puto cheese recipe will hit all the right spots. Filipino recipes are more known for their savory meat dishes but it’s definitely not lacking in any sweet fluffy desserts.

To be more precise, puto is a steamed rice cake that’s traditionally made with slightly fermented rice dough. It’s got a nice fluffy and doughy texture that everyone loves to eat. There are tons of different puto variety found throughout the archipelago. The standard ones are the plain puto that uses the most basic ingredients but it doesn’t mean it’s any less a treat.

Puto is commonly eaten as a light snack or as an accompanying dish to more savory meat recipes, most notably the dinuguan dish. It’s loads of fun dipping puto in a bowl or plate of dinuguan and taking a bite out of it. The flavors of the dinuguan dish can be overwhelming if you don’t have a side dish to eat it with. The plain puto treat balances the flavors quite nicely, the same thing with other flavorful Filipino dishes.

Plain puto treats are the most well-known puto recipe in the country but it by no means that puto is a plain rice delicacy. In fact, puto is an umbrella term for various different kinds of kakanin or rice delicacies in the Philippines.

There are multiple variants of shape, flavor, sizes, and color of puto found throughout the different regions of the country. Many of them has gained some form of popularity and can be bought anywhere in the country. And there are some variants of the puto dish that remained a specialized recipe in their region of origin.

The traditional puto recipe itself has evolved over the years through experimentation and has gone through a variety of many different unique recipes and flavors. All the while keeping the essence of the original puto recipe intact.

The puto variants that have become a specialization of their regions of origin are introduced to outsiders right at the bus station. Vendors would hop on the bus and sell their wares mostly consisting of freshly cooked kakanin. It’s a great strategy to introduce the region’s unique kakanin dish to visitors and served to bring a bit of fun on long journeys.

This is how I actually discovered some kakanin that I didn’t know of. Other than that, if you want to discover of what other kakanin the regions have to offer, I suggest visiting a local bakery and browse through what they have to offer.
